Courtyard
In this image of the courtyard, the three distinct section of Ewing
Manor are apparent: the residential wing, the garage, and the stables.
The courtyard is surrounded on all four sides by the brick and stone
of the building and garden wall. There is a porte cochere connecting
the driveway and the courtyard; archways lead to the north lawn and
the driveway toward Towanda Avenue. One of the doorways facing the
port chochere leads to a trunk lift for transporting heavy luggage
to the second floor. The brick of the courtyard was salvaged from the
old Wochner Brewery in south Bloomington. Among the amenities in the
garage were an underground fuel storage tank and special water and
electrical fixtures for washing and drying automobiles. Above the garage
were the servants’ quarters (now the caretaker’s apartment).
The stable wing contained a carriage barn, tack rooms, a 4-stall stable
with plumbing for watering the horses, and a hay loft.
